Notes on the Songs
Courting the Net is a love lament and a folk song for the 20th (and now 21st) century. . A hundred years from now it would be nice to think people would still latch on to its wry images and sing it with feeling
Underneath the Story Bridge is one of many songs Bob has written in 3/4 because it's easier to keep time! The song was inspired by listening to Roz & Chanel (Women in Docs) playing at the Story Bridge pub.
Andy's Gone with Cattle - Mike Jackson's melody is the prettiest of the many tunes to this Henry Lawson poem which portrays the hardships of this dry land, Australia, our adoptive homeland.
I Wake up Slow was brought to us by Leonie Cox, who insisted it was the perfect song for Laurel. One from Dory Previn's 1970 collection of cynical stories about suburban angst, love and other emotions.
Kristina Olsen, that mood-spinning songweaver, told us how she wished more people would cover her songs. So we learned Cry you a Waterfall which she wrote for a friend killed in a car crash.
Tales of a Mis-Spent Youth is Bob's semi-autobiographical song for everyman. It has a wistful, nautical feel, heightened by some heartfelt playing from Randall and Brendan, Roger McGuinn should be proud.
Not many singers take on Janis Joplin songs. We always thought Laurel's version of Turtle Blues was a cracker. She reckons the 'woman as badass' tone redresses the usual male hubris of the blues genre.
