Small Frog Song               words and music (c) Bob Wilson 1999

Verse 1
I killed a little green tree frog,
It must be obvious I made a mistake,
He was sitting there minding his own business,
I bashed him with a shovel and a rake,
I don't see well in the dark,
But we live next to a park
I was sure it was just another cane toad
I was trying to protect the dog,
Who just lay there like a log,
She didn't know how much was at stake.

Verse 2
I buried that little green tree frog,
Beneath a tree that I planted in the park,
And vowed next time that I would recognise
The dog's 'cane toad in the yard' bark
I know you'll find this hard to swallow,
But when you live in froggy hollow,
Nocturnal noise can spoil the mood for lovers,
You see, I had an awful dream, it shrunk my self -esteem
A band of frogs singing Joe Cocker covers.

Chorus
I killed a little green tree frog, and now the family's seeking retribution,
I dream they're sitting on my bed, while I toss and turn in dread,
Of their plans for an lingering execution.

Verse 3
My home's surrounded by little green tree frogs,
Demanding that I suffer for my sin,
They kept up this awful croaking chorus,
Night after night they kept us in
I called the RSCPA, they said please call back next day,
The police and SES were not much better,
And besides the frogs began to sing, and not just any old thing,
It was, "My baby she wrote me a letter''.

Repeat Chorus

Verse 4
There's no more little green tree frogs,
The weekend golfers have been practising their drive,
The kids crush them with the wheels of their skateboards,
And use spray cans to burn them alive
And the ones that survived, hopped to the water and then dived
Down the big maze of drains to the river,
And the ones that tried to breed, there's something wrong with their seed,
It's all those chemicals stored up in their livers.

Repeat Chorus

Verse 5
I killed a little green tree frog,
It seemed a fate far worse than breaking mirrors,
A local guru checked the state of my karma
It caught fire on the highway outside Kirra;
I'd had seven years of bad luck, I'm glad it wasn't a duck
Now I'm even kind to roaches, snakes and leeches,
Because you know what they say, do a good deed every day,
Who knows what little green tree frogs can teach us.
