The festival was rained out, her tent site washed away,
And the Guinness bar was set to close at two,
She was huddled in a corner looking fragile,
I thought of all the times that we'd been through,
I'd known her for a year or two, you'd say that we were friends,
But where does friendship end and passion come to pass
I looked at her with pure infatuation,
She looked through me like I was made of glass

I was mesmerised by love so unrequited,
So I said some heartfelt words to break the spell,
"You can come home with me and sleep in warmth and comfort,
"In my room at the Paradise Motel".

I wondered which side of the bed she'd want to sleep on,
I could hear her singing Crowded House songs in the shower,
She laid her underthings to dry across the lampshade,
I stared at them for maybe half an hour,
She fell asleep in drunk mid-conversation,
We'd talked of nothingness and being, as we do,
The corners of her sweet mouth formed an existential smile,
Her body language one could easily misconstrue.

I'm gonna walk around this motel three or four more times,
Like the needle on a compass gone astray,
You see, she loves me like and uncle or a brother,
And she wouldn't love me any other way
I'm sure to see the sun rise, I'm sure to feel like hell,
Walking round and round the Paradise Motel.

Now she's knocking on the steamed-up window of my Honda,
Where I fell asleep in the front seat for an hour,
She said "Come inside my love and I'll make you breakfast,
"But first I think you'd better take a shower,
We kissed longingly, our arms around each other in a sway,
Like two homesick sailors lately come to shore
And that's the moment when, alas, we both discovered,
She'd accidently locked the motel unit door.

We're gonna walk around this motel three or four more times,
Like the needle on a compass gone astray,
You see, she loved me like an uncle or a brother,
And now she wants to love me every other way,
We're sure to see the sunrise, we're sure to feel like hell,
Walking round and round the Paradise Motel,
We're sure to see the sunrise, we're sure to feel like hell,
Walking round and round the Paradise Motel.
